WO1 (RSM) Mason was educated at Baysgarth Comprehensive School, Barton-on-Humber, prior to joining the Royal Marines in January 1992 at the age of 17. On completion of recruit training he was assigned to Alpha Coy, 40 Cdo RM and conducted jungle training exercise in the Caribbean and South America. During his first appointment he deployed on two Op BANNER tours in Northern Ireland; West Belfast 1993; East Tyrone 1995. He gained additional operational experience under the command of NATO, as part of a maritime boarding team in the Adriatic in 1994. Having specialised in Heavy Weapons (ATK) he deployed on Ex OCEAN WAVE in 1997 with 40 Cdo RM as part of a contingent force that maintained a maritime presence during the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong. On completion of a Heavy Weapons Detachment Commanders (ATK) course in 1998, and Junior Command Course in 2000 he joined Bravo Coy, 40 Cdo RM, as a Rifle Company Section Commander where he conducted a further OP BANNER tour in West Belfast.
On completion of a RMSAA course in 2002, he was selected as a Recruit Instructor within CTW, CTCRM, and delivered a diverse level of military training to injured Recruits in Hunter Coy and provided instructional training to two recruit troops. Having passed a Heavy Weapons Section Commanders (ATK) course and Senior Command Course he was assigned back to 40 Cdo RM as a Stand-Off Company Troop Sergeant.
In 2004 he a deployed to Iraq on Operation TELIC IV and saw active service in Al Amarah, Baghdad and Basra. In 2006 he was drafted back to CTW as a Troop Sergeant for the All Arms Commando Course. This led to promotion to Colour Sergeant, where he was assigned to the Joint Support Unit in Northwood. During this assignment, he was employed as a Counter-Terrorist SNCO, which provided immediate security advice to the Base Security Officer. In 2008 and 2010 he deployed on two separate tours of Afghanistan with 45 Cdo RM; Op HERRICK 9 in the Sangin region of Afghanistan as Yankee Coy CQMS; and Op HERRICK 14 in Nad Ali
South as a Troop Commander.
In 2011 he successfully completed the Advanced Command Course where he received a distinction grade and returned to 40 Cdo RM as Command Coy CSM. He conducted a further tour in Afghanistan, Op HERRICK 17 in the NES region of Afghanistan as the Operations Warrant Officer and in 2013 joined Alpha Coy as the CSM.
In 2014 he was selected to be WO1 (RSM) and conducted his first appointment as the Regimental Sergeant Major of 43 Cdo FP Gp RM. He was appointed as the Regimental Sergeant Major of 40 Cdo RM in November 2014 and the Regimental Sergeant Major of HQ 3 Cdo Bde RM in August 2016. During the latter of the Regimental Sergeant Major appointments, he was selected to be the 14th Corps Regimental Sergeant Major, taking up the prestigious role in April 2018.
WO1 (RSM) Mason lives in Somerset with his wife and their three sons. His interests are spending time with the family, supporting his son’s football teams and reading Military history. Due to his interest in history, in 2016 he was awarded a BA (Hons) in History with the Open University and in 2018 he was awarded a MA in Military History with the University of Birmingham.
